We Out Here Festival

From Reading and Leeds Festival to Creamfields, and from Notting Hill Carnival to All Points East in London, the August bank holiday has long been a centrepiece for some of the UK’s biggest music events. But in 2022, another major event in Abbots Ripton, Cambridgeshire, is offering one of the most impressive line-ups of the year.

We Out Here Festival is the brainchild of BBC Radio 6 DJ Gilles Peterson, who curates the event in collaboration with Worldwide FM and his own Brownswood Recordings label. Conceived as “a festival that celebrates the elements of UK club culture, and the community that surrounds it,” the event is titled after the 2018 Brownswood compilation of the same name, which celebrates London’s multi-faceted new jazz scene.

This year’s line-up incorporates a breadth of talents from across a variety of genres, including soul, hip hop, afrobeat, electronica and experimental jazz — with a multitude of highlights spread across the four-day event. Among the most notable are legendary jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, Nigerian spoken word artist Obongjayar, and Brazilian jazz-funk trio Azymuth, while electronic duo Overmono headline the Rhythm Corner stage on the Thursday.

Elsewhere, Eddie Chacon brings celestial soul to the Main Stage alongside his most recent album’s producer, pianist and noted Solange collaborator John Carroll Kirby. Further highlights include Warp’s meditative sensation Nala Sinephro, Italian ambient composer Gigi Masin, and acclaimed eight-piece jazz ensemble Kokoroko.

We Out Here runs from 25th-28th August, 2022.
