A revered importer of Japanese music has published the latest episode of an eclectic music podcast online. ‘VDS Podcast Nr.017’ is curated and mixed by VDS founder Rintaro, and fuses ambient electronic, tropical jazz and oriental funk music from the likes of Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš, American pianist Keith Jarrett and afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The episode’s cover art evokes the ambient classic ‘Green’ by Hiroshi Yoshimura, while other shows in the series include guest mixes from NTS DJ Donna Leake and Seoul-based DJ and filmmaker Airbear
The podcast is a venture from VDS, a Tokyo-based vinyl distributor founded in 2018 who recently arrived in London via a pop-up store on Columbia Road. VDS London boasts the UK’s largest selection of second-hand Japanese records, ranging from funk and jazz to ‘80s city pop. Elsewhere on the retailer’s shelves are exclusive music books such as ‘Post-House Music Disc Guide’ – a new exploration of dance and leftfield records by blogger and DJ Sanshiro Matsushita.
