CTM Festival 2021

An experimental music and visual arts festival is hosting its highly innovative 2021 edition online this January. Berlin-based CTM Festival is a four-week event combining contemporary technology, live music, art installations and workshops under the banner of ‘Adventurous Music and Art’.

With ‘Transformation’ as the theme, the 2021 edition of CTM has unveiled a programme of unique experiential events that highlight the festival’s focus on the social role of music in digital culture. Highlights include ‘CTM Cyberia’, an immersive multiplayer 3D exhibition and festival space, and a series of virtual club nights held in a specially-constructed Minecraft world. ‘Apotome’, meanwhile, is a browser-based generative music system that emphasises microtonal tuning systems in order to counter the bias of Western music theory.

All online events are free, with attendees given the opportunity to tip artists directly via the CTM Drop App. Avant-garde musician Jim O’Rourke, Beijing-born techno producer object blue, and BBC Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs are among the live music highlights, while the CTM Discourse series features talks from gender studies scholar Ben Trott, and Lisa Rovner — director of the documentary ‘Sisters with Transistors’ on female pioneers in electronic music.

CTM Festival runs from January 19th to February 14th, 2021 online.
